Tutorial 7: Assistive Technology

Provide a definition of assisstive technology

"any item, peice of equipment or product system whether accuired commercially, modified, or customized that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities." (Cook, Hussey, 1995)

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial. Provide information on size, cost and functions.

During class this week, we looked at several different assisstive technologies. I have chosen to talk about the Go Talk 20. It is a lite weight device that allows the user to customize up to 100 messages that with the press of a button will play. It has a built in handle that provides easy carriage. It is slim and will fit into school bags. The cost of the Go Talk 20 is approximately $515.

How does your chosen piece of equipment increased functional capacity for the user?

It helps users to sequence their day or a task they are wanting to carry out, it helps with concentration and provides assisstance to stay on track, it helps users even if they cannot read, by the use of pictures and finally helps with communication difficulties. e.g by the client pressing a button the recorded sound will play communicating what the client is wanting to express.

Tutorial 6: The internet and online communities

Provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating

I have chosen to talk about good old facebook!!! The web address is www.facebook.com

What is the brief or focus of this community

Facebook is a social networking site. It has similar to MySpace and Bebo. The difference is that applications are added by the user. Users can find friends and send messages to stay in touch with present and old friends.

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?

By signing up to facebook, users are in charge of their own page. You can create it however you want by updating your staus, uploading photos/videos, providing as much personal detail as you like. Facebook allows the user the right to choose who can view their page by accepting or declining friend requests. Facebook allows users to instant message others or send private messages.

Why do people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

Facebook is very popular and many users join to feel a sense of 'belonging'. Facebook has many group pages that users can join which increases the feeling of belonging. e.g. i belong to a page that is about occuptaional therapy. Facebook is widely used throughout the world and it provides the means to stay in touch and communicate with friends. Facebook provides a service where users can express/communicate their own opinions freely.

Here is a snipet of topics discussed on facebook.

Comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.

There are many ethical issues that are present with online communities however facebook tries to ensure these issues are addressed and understood. When signing up to facebook users are informed of terms and responsibilies. Users are required to accept these terms and it helps to keep them safe while accessing their account. Several setting are constantly changes within facebook. e.g privacy. Users can decide who can view their page e.g public, mutual friends, friends or private. This helps with privacy and confidentially of users.

Comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community

Facebook has no barriers for communication and interaction between users other than whether they are deemed to be friends. Grographic context does not impact facebook as users all over the world are members to facebook. Facebook is a quick and simple form of communicating with people compared to writing as they required time to be sent and recieved,, whereas facebook is instant!!!

Wii Gaming

Why do you think that Wii gaming has an appeal to people who are not tradionally video game players?

Wii gaming has become a very popular rehabilitation tool that has appealed to many patients. The ease and interactivity of the games makes the Wii unique and rewarding for people of all ages and abilities.

What is the relevance here for Occupational Therapy?

The Wii games are especially helpful for stroke patients who have regained use of only one arm. They only require the use of a single controller. The Wii is such a powerful rehab tool because it requires focus from the patient and often recovery is more fast and enjoyable. The Wii is useful in occupational therapy for people of all ages because it helps them redevelop the coordination to relearn daily living skills such as brushing teeth and combing hair. Although it is game based, the Wii rehab programme helps patients develop physical co-ordination, hand reflexes, hand-eye co-ordination and increases their fine motor control.

Investigate the other applications offered by the Wii gaming consol, how else could it be used as an OT tool?

Wii gaming alos helps patients to reduce stress leaves,it provides inspiration to "get their creative juices flowing", it provides physical exercise which can increase fitness or loose weight, provides educaton, many games can be played solo or as a team and therefore establishes and increases the paitents abilty to work together and finally increases the patients attention and focus in an enjoyable way.

Tutorial 4&5: Video Production Sessions

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by You Tube

You Tube is a popular hosting and sharing service which allows users to upload and view video files. You Tube creates a sense of community by allows users to rate, comment and follow favourite producers. You Tube uses the Adobe Flash format, which is supported by most browsers including internet explorer. You Tube allows users to embed any video onto a blog or webpage at no cost.

Here is a 3 minute clip on the history of You Tube!!

Provide a brief account on how the use of planning, storyboarding and scripting aided your groups short film.

Storyboarding is a series of drawings of the proposed film, as it will appear on the screen. The drawings are an important part in the production of any film or video. It is the plan of the end product and is often reffered to during production process.

"Storyboards are graphic organizers such as a series of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence, including website interactivity." (Wikipedia)
"The script is the vehicle by which thoughts and ideas of the author are transmitted to the audience. The script should be the basis for everything that is both heard and seen on the screen." (Participation in Occupation 1, 2010)

A good script should look to include the following points:
*moods and expressions
*facial expressions
*vocal expressions
*movement
*special effects
*lighting
*camera angles and types of shot

Storyboarding and scripting aided my group when creating our short film because it meant that each scene was carefully planned and we all knew exactly what is to be done and no time is wasted trying to organise what each creator is going to do. It also provided all creators an understanding about the different aspects each scene including the different camera angles and expressions of each actor during each specific scene.

Tutorial 2: Digital Camera Use and Applications

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature".

Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras.

Film and digital cameras capture completely different media. They are used for similar purposes, but they themselves are completely unrelated to each other. Debating which is better is pointless as it depends on what you want to achieve.

Traditional film based cameras- Film based cameras have high photo quality with a low cost to buy the camera. The user have a variety of filters and lens which allows a wide spectrum in which to work. However film based cameras are much heavier than digital cameras and also photos must be developed before you have a chance to view the photo.

Digital cameras- Digital cameras allow the user to instantly view the picture that was just taken, you can delete any unwanted photos and you can store hundreds of photos using a memory stick inside the camera instead of having to print out every photo. Digital Photos do have some disadvantages. They are a larger up-front investment. According to DigitalCameraInfo.com camera prices range from $270-$6595, aslo digital cameras are more sensitive to shocks and drops

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communication technology

*Flickr
*Photoshop
*Coral Paint Shop Pro Photo
*Photo Studio
*Photo Scape

Consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use

Privacy and confidentality- Confidentiality and Privacy require that all parties must ensure that information is restricted to those who genuinely need to know. Also parties need to ensure that any indentifying information is also restricted e.g personal identifying photos

Discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are being used in Occupational Therapy practice

Digital cameras are a huge resource for children interventions such as activities involving cards. You can even view, resize and print your own digital camera images to use as flashcards. If a photo that is meaningful to the clint is used in intervention the clinet is more likey to engage in occupation. Digital camera resources are used to teach typical kids as well as those with learning disabilities and delays.

Provide a brief summary of services offered by Flickr.com

Flickr.com is a service commonly used by bloggers. Photographs are hosted by Flickr.com and then they are embed to perosnal blogs or other social networks. Flickr.com allows users to upload and organise their photos, share and stay in touch with other users, crop, fix and edit their photos and to explore the internet.

Name one other photo storage website

Fotki- Share and print your photos

Explain the difference between a digital and optimal zoom

All cameras generally have both digital and optimal zoom.

Optical Zoom- works like a zoom lens on a film camera. The lens changes focal length and magnification as it is zoomed. The image quality stays high.
Digital zoom- crops the image to a smaller size, then enlarges the cropped image to fit the frame again. This zoom results in a significant loss of quality.

Definition of Megapixel

Manufacturers categorise digital cameras in terms of pixel count. A pixel is the total number of individual pixels that make up each image.
"A megapixel (MP) is 1 million pixels, and is a term used not only for the number of pixels in an image, but also to express the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras or the number of display elements of digital displays." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megapixel
