Definition of Information Technology
Information Technology is the "production , storage and communication of information using computers and microelectronics." Hanks, P. (ed).(1989)Collins Concise Dictionary. Glasgow:Bath Press.
How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How commom place has it become?
We live in a society surrounded by advancing technologies which has lead to technologies such as computers being widely used.People use these technologies to organise, connect with the wider community, spread and recieve information easily and be exposed to cultures and people that without technology they would not be able to.
What IT devices do you feel comfortable using?
I am a 'generation y' (born between 1980-2000) meaning that I have grown up with ever advancing technology. From a young age I was introduced to the internet, cellphones and music players. Due to this, I am confident using several technologies such as computers doing emailing, information searches and social networking, also using cellphones and ipods
How is IT being used in Occupational Therapy practice?
As an OT we need to embrace the use of mainstream technology in our quest to ensure therapy remains current and meaningful to clients. As an OT, we are constantly wanting to improve our skills in practice and using IT to research is a way to do this. As an OT we need to be aware that IT is becoming more common place and we need to explore differnece technologies that provide the most benefical interventions suitable for the client.
Whilst on placement I have seen IT being used to record client notes. Organisations are moving from written paper notes to electronic recordings. The problem this can cause is that as therapists we need to learn and cope with the rapid software changes. A potential therapy tool maybe using reminders on mobile phones as memory aids.
What ethical implications arise from capturing, sharing, and transferring of informaiton via IT devices?
Digital Divide is the gap between those with regular and effective access to digital technologies with those without. It also refers to those who can benefit from IT and those who can't.
The Internet provides little assurance of privacy or confidentiality. The use of firewalls, anonymizers, and encryption can help mitigate the risks.
Confidentiality "ensures that information is accessible only to those authorized to have access"

Summarise why understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our practise and daily lives.
As an OT we need to have a good understanding of ITC and ethical issues as we need to be responsible for us as therapists and our clients safety.
